Juice Crafters – Master Cleanse

IMG_0287Have you tried a juice cleanse before? Over the weekend, I decided to get adventurous with Juice Crafters, and try their 1 day “Master Cleanse.” This cleanse is designed to improve your day-to-day health and help your body eliminate toxins while replacing them with powerful nutrients. It consists of 8 cold pressed, raw juices each containing unique and beneficial ingredients to detox, improve health, enhance beauty, increase energy and immune function. The goal is to drink one juice every two hours and drink about 6-8 cups of water throughout the day in between juices. The order in which you drink the juices is also very important. Juice Crafters gave me a reminder sheet with the juices listed in the order to be consumed.

As a Registered Dietitian, I see many clients who ask about “cleansing” and “detox” juice blends. Usually my clients are inclined to ask about these after a stink of traveling, unhealthy eating and drinking, dining out or recent weight gain. My answer to them is that our bodies are equipt with all of the necessary organs to detoxify, such as the liver, kidneys and lungs. However, because these organs are working around the clock, day in and day out, (somedays more than others depending on what you ate and drank) it is nice to give them a break once in a while. A 1-3 day juice cleanse that is packed with nutrients is the best way to do it! Please note that I don’t recommend doing the old “lemon, honey, water and cayenne pepper cleanse” that people have been doing for years to gain quick weight loss results because it will deplete your body of nutrients and lead to dehydration.

Juice Crafters on the other hand, is a great way to hit the “reset” button on your digestive tract and organs, and allow your body to filter many of the toxins that could have been lingering in your body for quite some time. Most people are aware that fruits and vegetables are “good for you.” However, I am here to explain the health benefits of each juice based on their ingredients. Each one of the juices contains a rich source of fiber, which helps keep you full and promotes a healthy and regular digestive tract.

  1. IMG_0288Greenest #3: consists of spinach, kale, romaine, cucumber, parsley, celery, lemon, apple and ginger.

RD insight:

  • Green vegetables are one of the best types of foods to consume in the morning because you are coming from an overnight fast and need to balance blood sugar levels. These greens are specifically high in antioxidants which are cancer fighting, rich in calcium, fiber, Vitamin K, C, A, B, iron, folate, magnesium, and omega 3 fatty acids (important for brain function).
  • The lemon helps the body become more alkaline (balanced) and can also enhance the absorpotion of iron (from leafy green vegetables) in the body which is important for red blood cell formation that deliver oxygen to the body’s tissues.
  • The apple provides soluble fiber which will help lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and reduce risk of heart disease while also providing a slighlty sweet taste but without any added sugar.
  • The ginger has a great anti-nausea effect, as well as anti-viral properties which helps boost immune function.

  1. IMG_0289Cleaner #10: consists of pineapple, apple, and mint.

RD insight:

  • Pineapple contains an important enzyme called bromelain which improves protein and nutrient digestion, reduces inflammation, prevents blood clotting and can help reduce swelling post surgery or reduce joint and muscle pain post injury.
  • The phytonutrients (plant nutrients) in apples can help regulate blood sugar which is especially important for anyone who is diabetic or pre-diabetic. Apples are also high in antioxidants which can prevent cancer (more specifically colon and breast cancer) and heart disease.
  • Mint helps to reduce inflammation, and activates the salivary glands in our mouth which secrete digestive enzymes to soothe the stomach and facilitate digestion. It is also used as a palate cleanser after the appetizer and before the main course. It is a stimulant which may help to increase weight loss, alertness and decrease fatigue.

At this point in the cleanse, I felt great! I felt energized, full and satisfied. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and I didn’t feel like I was missing out this morning. Juice Crafters was providing me with all of the necessary nutrients to keep my mind and body running at full speed.

  1. IMG_0290Rootier #6: contains beet, apple, lemon, and ginger.

RD insight:

  • Beets are high in phytonutrients (plant nutrients called betalains) which have an antioxidant effect (cancer fighting) and reduce inflammtion, as well as detox. They are also a good source of folate, iron, Vitamin B6, and electrolytes potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus.
  • As stated earlier, apples provide a rich source of soluble fiber and can help to lower LDL (bad cholesterol), increase satiety (i.e. “the full factor” and can be related to weight loss) and lower risk of heart disease.
  • Lemon is a rich source of Vitamin C, a water soluble antioxidant that travels through the body to neutralize free radicals (which can damage healthy cells and cause inflammation).
  • As mentioned before, ginger has great anti-nausea and anti-viral properties and can relieve gastrointestinal distress. It is an antioxidant (reducing risk of tumors/cancer of the colon or ovaries) and reduces inflammtion.

  1. IMG_0291Alkaline Tonic #13: contains apple, lemon, ginger and cayenne pepper

RD insight:

  • This juice has similar benefits to juice #3 (i.e. Rootier #6) however it also has the added bonus of cayenne pepper. This powerful compound is used for cleansing and detoxifying remidies. It can act as a digestive aid to treat upset stomach, relieve allergies and acts as an anti-cold and anti-flu. It boosts metabolism and may lead to weight loss. It can help to lower blood pressure, relieve joint pain and reduce migraines and headaches.

  1. IMG_0292Cleaner #10: contains pineapple, apple, and mint

RD insight:

  • This juice blend contains the same ingredients as juice #2. I believe that it is repeated to provide additional antioxidant and anticancer properties and serve as a palate cleanser between juices. Mint can also help to reduce nausea, headaches and increase digestive enzymes which will help the body to get through the last 3 juice blends to finish out the cleanse.

At this point in the cleanse I felt as though I was starting to get a little hungry. I am an athlete and exercise daily, (i.e. whether it be running, yoga, high intensity interval training, cycling, etc.) which boosts my metabolism and makes me hungry more often. I felt nourished, however my muscles were craving more protein.

  1. IMG_0293Cleanse Guru #12: contains cucumber, pineapple, and coconut water

RD insight:

  • Cucumber is an important vegetable that nourishes the kidneys and contains a rich source of Vitamin K, which plays a key role in blood clotting (i.e. activates proteins that trigger blood coagulation). Cucumbers also contain copper which helps make neurotransmitters (i.e. chemicals that the brain cells need to communicate) and produce energy, as well as increase immune function. The calcium maintains hormone balance.
  • As mentioned earlier, pineapple contains bromelain which has strong antioxidant and anti inflammatory properties, protecting against cancer. The vitamin C aids in increased immune function, and manganese and thiamin (Vitamin B1) are important for energy production.
  • Coconut water is a rich source of potassium (i.e. more potassium than 4 bananas), newly named as “Mother Nature’s sports drink” which can help to lower blood pressure and boost hydration. It can also help to moisturize the skin and aid in weight loss efforts.

  1. IMG_0294Almond Nut Milk #15: contains almonds, dates, vanilla beans, sea salt, and water

RD insight:

  • Almonds are high in the heart healthy monounsaturated fat which has been associated with decreasing LDL (bad cholesterol), raising HDL (good cholesterol), therefore lowering your risk of heart disease. Almonds are a rich source of the antioxidant Vitamin E as well as potassium, magnesium and phosphorus (important electrolytes for nerve transmission and proper flow of nutrients throughout the body). It helps to stabilize blood sugar levels and increase satiety, which is great for diabetics or those who want to lose weight.
  • Dates help to relieve constipation, gastrointestinal disorders, heart problems, anemia (contains high content of iron), and can help prevent abdominal cancer. This super food is rich in calcium which can help strengthen bones and prevent osteoporosis. It is rich in vitamins, minerals and electrolytes such as phosphorus, sodium, potassium and magnesium. They are a natural energy booster and enhance the nervous system and acts as an aphrodisiac.
  • Vanilla beans contain small amounts of B vitamins, which help in regulating body metabolism. It also contains small traces of minerals (i.e. calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, iron and zinc).
  • Sea salt provides a source of sodium to balance out the potassium of the juice blend, and maintaining electryolyte balance.

This was my favorite juice because it had a nutty, yet slightly sweet taste from the dates and vanilla beans. It also provided a little protein from the nuts which I enjoyed. However, at this point I was a little hungry because I had a busy day and walked a few miles and needed to add some protein. Therefore, I had a cup of nonfat, plain Greek yogurt with blueberries and walnuts with a sprinkle of cinnamon. I chose a light option, plant protein based which yielded approximately 150 calories and 23 grams of protein without any unhealthy fats.

  1. IMG_0295Aloe-vera Water: contains pure aloe vera, water

RD insight:

  • Aloe vera contains healing properties for the skin and helps digestion and detoxification, as welll as alkalizing the body. It helps to reduce inflammation and acts as a disinfectant. Aloe vera contains over 200 active components and includes Vitamin A, C, E, folic acid, choline, and B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6, B12) and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, chromium, selenium, sodium, iron, potassium, copper, manganese.

I had a wonderful experience with the Juice Crafters 1 day master cleanse. I will recommend it to my clients and can also point out specific juices to clients who have specific needs or deficiencies.

courtneywalberg_1354My skin was more vibrant and soft to the touch, enhancing the “glow factor.” My hair was more silky and had more shine. My stomach/abbs became more toned and defined. I lost about 1 pound, however I did not do this cleanse with the goal of weight loss. I wanted to optomize my health and total body detox. As an Registered Dietitian, I follow a very balanced and healthy diet and exercise routine on a daily basis consuming many fruits and vegetables, super foods (maca, cacao, hemp, chia, etc.), lean proteins, nuts and seeds, and high intensity workout regimen. However, it is always good to set the “reset” button and give your body a break with a one day cleanse. I enjoy continuing to learn about new ways to optimize health and wellbeing.

You’ll really notice the difference if you try incorporating some of the fruits and vegetables that I have discussed into your diet.  Organic mint is extremely beneficial to your health and there are so many ways to incorporate it into your lifestyle.  Apples are one of the best  foods for fighting cancer and lowering cholesterol. I recommend ginger or ginger tea to all of my clients who have nausea, upset stomach, digestive disorders, who are fighting a cold/flu or morning sickness (pregnancy). It is root with so many health remedies.

I hope you enjoyed learning about the cleanse and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to learn more!
